Cucumbers are rightfully considered one of the most common and popular vegetables for any gardener. There are few people among summer residents who would not appreciate their excellent juicy taste. The fruits of this plant also contain many vitamins and minerals that have a beneficial effect on human health.

Causes of yellowed leaves in cucumbers

Wrong watering

Normally, the soil should be moderately moist at a depth of 10 cm. The plant does not like dehydration. And if cucumbers are watered too rarely or with little water, they instantly show their discontent in the form of yellow leaves. Cucumbers also do not tolerate abundant watering. In this case, there is a risk of rotting the bush.

Lack of fertilizer

If you don’t feed your cucumbers the right amount of food, the leaves will tell you quickly. Indeed, during the growing season, cucumber bushes are in dire need of nitrogen fertilizers. Don’t forget to keep an eye on it.

hypothermia

Cold temperatures can stress the plant and cause yellow leaves. Therefore, it is highly undesirable to allow possible frostbite of the bushes.

Scorching sun

Avoid watering during the day during active sunlight. Because there is a high probability of getting a sunburn if drops of water accidentally fall on cucumber leaves. It is recommended to water the plant in the morning or evening when the sun is still milder.

Watering under the sun

damaged roots

There is a possibility that during weeding, loosening the earth or planting cucumbers in open ground, the root system was damaged. In this case, the leaves will inevitably turn yellow. Therefore, it is so important to carefully plant the bushes in the ground and loosen the soil as carefully as possible and to a shallow depth.

ONE OF THE CAUSES OF YELLOWING LEAVES CAN BE DISEASES AND VIRUSES.

The affected bush will be weak and lethargic, and most likely will not bear any fruit. It is also worth distinguishing the usual yellowing of the leaves from such a complex disease as yellowing and curling of the leaves. Experienced gardeners should be able to tell the difference, because the causes are different.

Why cucumber leaves turn yellow and curl at the same time:

powdery mildew

This is a common problem that every second summer resident has encountered. To eliminate this disease, as well as to prevent its occurrence, it is recommended to treat the leaves with a 1% solution of Bordeaux mixture. And if you grow your cucumbers in a greenhouse, then it must be aired regularly.

Pests

In case you began to notice the twisting of the leaves of cucumbers, you must carefully examine the entire bush. There is a chance that pests have attacked the plant, and you will find cobwebs or aphids. In this case, it is urgent to spray the cucumbers with insecticides until the plant dies.

Pests

Viruses

If you follow all the rules and recommendations for caring for, watering, fertilizing and spraying cucumbers, and the leaves are still curling and turning yellow, then a viral infection may be the likely cause of this problem. And, unfortunately, it is necessary to get rid of such a plant. Otherwise, the virus can spread to other crops and infect them.

It happens that only the lower leaves of cucumbers turn yellow and the reasons may be as follows:

  • Bad lighting . Cucumbers have rather dense foliage, which makes it difficult for sunlight to break through to the bottom of the bush. In this case, the plant naturally sheds the lower leaves, which is not a cause for concern.
  • Insufficient watering . As we said above, proper watering is very important for growing delicious cucumbers. This plant loves a moderate amount of moisture.

THEREFORE, IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TO OBSERVE THE CORRECT MODE OF WATERING CUCUMBERS.

  • Insufficient nutrition . Yellowed leaves at the bottom of the bush may indicate a deficiency of nutrients, such as magnesium, potassium and phosphorus. To make up for the deficiency, complex top dressing is recommended. You should not resort to separate fertilizer, as there is a risk of incorrectly calculating the ratio of useful nutrients.
  • Fungal disease . First of all, with any disease, the lower leaves of cucumbers suffer. The most common ailments are fusarium and pitiosis. When infected, the bush becomes lethargic and very weak. It is recommended to dispose of affected leaves and burn them to prevent further infection.

If, for some reason, you are still faced with yellowing of cucumber leaves, you can resort to a tricky treatment of plants.

What solutions can help?

  • Soap-milk solution . How to breed? Recipe – you will need 10 liters of water, 1 liter of milk, 20 grams of laundry soap and 30 drops of iodine. Mix all the ingredients well and thoroughly, while the soap should completely dissolve. It is recommended to process cucumber leaves every 10 days.
  • Iodine with bread . How to prepare a solution? Soak a loaf of white or black bread in a bucket of water, preferably overnight. In the morning you need to knead the bread and add a full jar of iodine. You will have a concentrate. 1 liter of this concentrate should be diluted in 10 liters of water and the cucumbers should be sprayed with this solution every two weeks.
  • Infusion of onion skins . How to cook? Pour the onion peel (700 grams jar) with 10 liters of water and put the container on the fire, bringing to a boil. After that, remove from heat, cover with a lid and let it brew for at least 14 hours. Then strain and dilute with plain water in a ratio of 1:4. Spray the plant with this solution.
  • Potassium permanganate . One of the most effective and proven methods in the fight against yellowed leaves of cucumbers. It is necessary to spray the plant with a 1% solution of potassium permanganate.
  • Soda solution . As you know, it is always better to prevent any disease than to fight it later. Therefore, for prevention, it is recommended to water the cucumbers with a soda solution in the proportion – 1 tablespoon of soda per 10 liters of water.
  • Herbal infusion . If we talk about the safest fertilizer, then this is definitely herbal top dressing. How to prepare a tincture? It is necessary to pour a bucket of water 1 kilogram of fresh grass. Then this solution is infused for a week. The result is a versatile concentrate that can be used for both spraying and root watering. Before use, dilute the concentrate with water in a ratio of 1:9.
