Whitefly in the greenhouse: how to get rid of

whitefly in the greenhouse how to get rid of Blog

Growing vegetables in a greenhouse is a very profitable and enjoyable experience. It’s great when you have fresh vegetables and herbs on your table all year round. But this occupation requires a lot of knowledge and skills from the summer resident.

To maintain plants intact and safe, you need to be able to create the necessary conditions in the greenhouse, as well as constantly protect plants from all kinds of diseases and harmful insects, for example, whiteflies on tomatoes or spider mites on eggplant .

The most difficult task for a summer resident is the whitefly, which loves to live in a greenhouse. In this article, we want to convey information that will allow you to destroy this insect, both by chemical and folk remedies.

Whitefly on a leaf

How to recognize a whitefly

The whitefly is a very small midge that is usually white, gray or light yellow in color. The length is about 1.5-3 mm. It’s hard to believe that such a small insect can do so much harm. The whitefly in the greenhouse multiplies very quickly. One female can lay about a hundred eggs, and in 1-2 weeks a whole army of small pests will appear from them.

The greenhouse for the whitefly is the most comfortable habitat, and the warm temperature and moisture are the best breeding conditions for it. The warmer the air, the faster the larva will turn into an imago, which can fly and lay offspring. This process takes about 25 days. Full-fledged adult whiteflies live for about 14 – 35 days. At all stages of development, the insect is intensively engaged in wrecking plants.

If you see a white midge in your greenhouse, then most likely it is a whitefly. You can identify this insect by the following signs:

  • the presence of scales under the leaf plate – larvae;
  • the appearance on the plant of a sticky and shiny coating, called honeydew. These are the waste products of the whitefly;
  • black spots that appear during the development of soot fungus;
  • the leaves turn yellow and curl up, and the plant stops growing.

Causes of whitefly

The causes of whitefly are mainly the following factors:

  • warm air temperature;
  • air humidity;
  • stale air;
  • plant density.

The best place for the existence of whiteflies is greenhouses and greenhouses. Often these are places where there is no good ventilation and the plants are very close to each other. From this it follows that summer residents have the opportunity to prevent the appearance of these pests.

What exactly is dangerous whitefly?

In the process of life, she consumes the juices of plants, while enduring various diseases. To do this, she pierces the leaves, weakening the plants, depriving them of normal nutrition and disrupting the process of photosynthesis. After this, the flowers appear defects.

Adult pests leave their feces on the plants, which corrode their surface and promote the reproduction of the fungus. Such actions of the whitefly can cause great harm to greenhouse plants. Below we will consider how the fight against the whitefly takes place in the greenhouse.

Methods of dealing with whitefly in the greenhouse

Insect prevention is the most effective way to fight. Always ensure the ventilation of the greenhouse, it is better to create a draft. You should also inspect the leaves of the plant in order to timely identify larvae or midges. Well, if you suspect that the pest has already appeared in the greenhouse, then immediately proceed to its destruction.

To combat this pest, they came up with chemical, biological and folk remedies.

The most effective preparations for the fight against whitefly in the greenhouse

I propose to further consider how to get rid of the whitefly in the greenhouse. Against this insect, it is better to use store-bought products, especially complex preparations that destroy both larvae and adults. Popular means are “Aktara”, “Aktellik”, “Double Effect”, “Admiral”, “Commander”, “Mospilan”, “Tanrek”, “Oberon” and others. These drugs immediately destroy insects.

There are two effective options for using such funds:

  1. The drug is diluted according to the instructions, the leaves of the plants are sprayed with the prepared composition, and the stems and soil are sprayed with a certain frequency. All this will take from 4 to 8 weeks;
  2. This option is more effective in the fight against insects, since here you need to water the roots of plants with toxic substances. With this option, the leaves and stem become poisonous to the whitefly. Here the treatment period will take from 2 to 4 weeks. In addition to watering, powder products are also used to sprinkle the soil.

The use of biological techniques in the fight against whitefly

There is a very effective biological agent for insect control. This is a predator plant that can fight the whitefly. To do this, you should grow Fragrant Martinia, a plant from Africa. The second name is Devil’s Claw. She attracts insects to herself, and uses those that simply stick to her leaves as top dressing.

The second good and reliable biological method of protection is the use of entomophagous insects. These are Encarsia, Trichaporus and Macrolophus. They serve well as a preventive measure and to reduce the number of whiteflies. Some of these insects lay their eggs directly into the whitefly larvae, while destroying them, while the rest eat the pest at different stages of its development.

Insect control chemicals

Such insecticides are effective: Aktellik, Fufanon, Konfidor, Mospilan. But they cannot destroy the insect when the larva turns into a nymph. To do this, you need to treat the plant 2-3 times every 7-8 days, and at the same time add biological agents based on an entomopathogenic fungus. The plant should be processed according to the instructions and wrapped in polyethylene to make a poisonous greenhouse.

In this case, the poison will evaporate and destroy the larvae, but if you forget to wrap such a plant, then the insect is very likely to survive. All processing actions should be done outdoors, in the absence of wind, in special clothing and a respirator. Heavily damaged parts of the flower, leaves can be removed immediately, as they cannot be restored, and they will continue to rot.

The choice of chemical agent always depends on how many whiteflies destroy your greenhouse. First, you should use paralyzing agents: Aktara, Aktelik, Confidor and Vermitex. Pests after their action stop moving, dying after a couple of days. But it won’t work on whitefly larvae.

The drug acts for about 20 days, and the larva develops for 25 days. For these purposes, it is better to use the following means: Mospilan, Match, Admiral and others, the main thing is that they destroy the larvae.

Summer residents often use the means of both the first and second groups at the same time. But this procedure must be repeated in a week and not by the means that were used for the first time.

Ways to protect against whiteflies folk remedies

Those who do not like to use chemical methods can try folk remedies. Usually they are used for indoor flowers and for preventive purposes. But if you want to protect your crop, try these remedies in your greenhouse. Unfortunately, they do not have a lasting effect, but the vegetables will be environmentally friendly.

Use the following recipes:

  1. Grind the washed leaves and rhizomes of dandelions (60-70 g) and pour 1 liter of boiling water. Spray vegetables every 10 days
  2. At the initial stage of appearance, an infusion of garlic is useful: grate 100 g and pour 0.5 liters of water. Hold the infusion for 4 days and then spray with a solution of 5 g of infusion per 1 liter of water.

Also effective ways would be:

  • hanging sticky tapes or traps in the greenhouse;
  • pouring a mixture of ash and tobacco dust under the flowers;
  • ignition coil from mosquitoes.

The use of folk methods in the fight against diseases of cucumbers or other vegetables in a greenhouse is considered an effective way that does not harm either human health or the condition of flowers. So if you’re fighting whiteflies on tomatoes, cucumbers, and other vegetables, this is a good way to go.

To obtain a remarkable result, it is recommended to alternate chemical, biological and folk methods. Also about preventive measures, because it is easier to prevent the appearance of pests than to destroy them after infection
