The best varieties of garden strawberries

the best varieties of garden strawberries Blog

Garden strawberries are ripening, which means that the real summer has come. I have tested many varieties of garden strawberries, now I grow more than ten. The best of them can be conditionally divided into three types: early, large-fruited late and remontant. With such a set of varieties, you can have berries from the beginning of June until frost.

I have been dealing with garden strawberries for more than ten years, it all started with Lord, and now I am engaged in breeding and distributing new promising varieties: Lord, Gigantella, Bogotá, Gummigrand, etc., which are described below. Of the remontant varieties, Tristar and Geneva turned out to be the best for our zone.

Working with large-fruited varieties, and these are mainly varieties of foreign selection, I came to the conclusion that planting strawberries to protect them from freezing in the autumn and spring snowless periods should be covered with some material (preferably spruce branches – branches of conifers).

I give a brief description of the best varieties that I have tested, a few tips on agricultural techniques and photographs taken on my site.

LORD – large-fruited garden strawberry of English selection, late, extended fruiting period. Growth of harvest from year to year in one place without replanting up to 10 years. Record berry up to 100g., Wed weight 30-60g. At the same time, up to 6 berries ripen on the peduncle, the variety is fruitful. Berries of sweet and sour taste, excellent taste in sunny weather. It reproduces with a mustache in the first and second years of life, the mustache loses its varietal qualities from the third year. Only the first rosette from a bush on a mustache is taken. The variety is frost-resistant and self-pollinating, requires good feeding 3 times a year. It responds to frequent feeding with an increase in yield. Watering abundantly before the berries ripen and after harvest.strawberry variety Gigantella

Care: place the ridges in sunny places, 120-140 cm wide with a 2-row system and 90-120 cm with a single-row system. Between the bushes in a row 70-80 cm. The main dressing is done 3 times a year:

1. In early spring (after cutting off old leaves).

2. During the budding period (the extension of the peduncles).

3. After harvest (after cutting off old leaves).

GIGANTELLA, BOGOTA, GUMMIGRAND – the best large-fruited varieties of strawberries of foreign selection, late, extended fruiting period. The record weight of berries is up to 100 grams, berries have a dessert flavor.

Care: like the variety Lord.

TAPIRA, DUKAT, MASHENKA, FAVORIT, HOLIDEY, FESTIVALNAYA – the best varieties of medium-ripening strawberries, of which only Festivalnaya and Mashenka have sweet and sour taste, the rest are sweet. The maximum weight of berries is up to 50 g.

ZEMKLUNIKA-PENELOPA is a hybrid of garden strawberries and strawberries. Late variety, maximum berry weight up to 25 grams, average 8-12 grams, oval-elongated, very sweet with a delicate strawberry aroma.strawberry variety Tristar

TRISTAR is the best remontant variety (2 harvests per summer) of American selection. The size of the bush is average (70-80 cm in diameter). It gives a little mustache (8-10 pcs.). Berries are elongated-conical, sweet, aromatic, tender pulp. The maximum weight of berries is up to 30 grams, suitable for freezing. Transplanting the bushes is annual, since the bush bears fruit abundantly all summer. The second crop begins to ripen on the bushes and on the mustache from the third decade of July, with a cold summer – from the beginning of August until frost. The yield is high. The variety is resistant to most diseases.

Leaving: planting on ridges 90-100 cm wide in one row with a distance of 70-80 cm between bushes. During the second flowering, mustaches appear before the berries of the second harvest are poured. The whiskers are partially taken for reproduction, while removing the peduncles, the rest of the whiskers bear fruit, the whiskers are not cut off, they are distributed evenly along the beds on both sides of the bush. Thus, by the fall, the garden has 3 rows of bushes. In the spring, the uterine (adult) bushes are replaced with new, young ones.

GENEVA is a remontant variety (2 harvests per summer), the height of the bush is average, the leaves are large dark green, the berries are large up to 50 grams, sweet taste, dark red, round-elongated. Whiskers give very little from 1 to 3, on separate ones – a little more. Propagated by dividing the bush or sowing seeds. The second harvest ripens a little later than Tristar, the berries of the second harvest are larger, plentiful, flower stalks are short, the berries seem to hide under the leaves. The variety is winter-hardy, disease-resistant. Transplanting bushes in 2-3 years, reproduction only from bushes of the 1st year.strawberry variety Geneva

Leaving: like Tristar.

BASIC RULE FOR STRAWBERRY: If you want berries – remove the mustache, if you want a mustache – remove the berries.

Strawberry reproduction only from the mustache of the 1st and 2nd year, only the 1st socket is taken on the mustache, then the mustache is pinched. 50% of the bushes bloom in the first year, the rest – in the second year. For the winter, cover the bushes with spruce branches.

Planting, care and feeding of strawberries

Dig up the ground with humus, peat, ash, superphosphate in the recommended doses. Lime acidic soils. Form ridges a week before planting. The width of the ridge for large-fruited varieties is 90-100 cm with a distance between bushes 60-80 cm with planting in one row. The height of the ridge should be at the level of the track; raise the ridge only in flooded areas.

A week after planting the seedlings on the main ridges, it is necessary to feed it with wood ash (sprinkle around the bush, pour water, loosen it). After 2-4 days, you can feed it with full mineral fertilizer (in recommended doses). After 2-4 days, feed with infusion of mullein or bird droppings. The main care is feeding. Loosen the soil after each top dressing. Main dressing should be done according to the same method in the following terms:

  • In the spring, after cutting off old leaves.
  • At the moment of budding (extension of peduncles).
  • After harvesting and pruning old leaves.

All young leaves when pruned in spring, leave after harvest, if they are not diseased.

Treat plants from pests in early spring with a weak solution of potassium permanganate, heated to 65 degrees. From a weevil, gray rot and for the purpose of feeding, treat it at the time of budding and a week later with iodine solution (1/2 teaspoon of iodine in a bucket of water). To enhance flowering and setting berries, treat with a solution of boric acid in a bucket of water at the tip of a knife. To protect the berries from rot, mulch with straw during the flowering period.

As a planting material, take only the first rosette on the mustache of a one-year or two-year-old bush. To obtain high-quality seedlings in the spring, it is necessary to remove the peduncles. From a three-year-old bush, the mustache loses its varietal qualities and is destroyed. For quick anchoring of the rosette, press it to the ground with a hairpin made of aluminum wire such as an elongated number seven. For the winter (before the onset of frost), cover the plantings with spruce branches (branches of the Christmas tree).
