Preparation for planting seeds for seedlings

preparation for planting seeds for seedlings Blog

Sowing seeds for seedlings is a crucial moment. It is necessary not only to deal with seed in time, but also to follow some agrotechnical standards. This concerns the preparation of seeds, soil, the creation of certain conditions for germination, in order to obtain strong healthy seedlings of vegetable crops and flowers before planting in the ground.

Soil preparation

For growing seedlings of flowers, flowers, tomatoes, peppers and other crops, a nutritious soil rich in microelements is needed. This is a prerequisite for successful seed germination and sprout development. Consider what soil is best to choose for tomatoes.

You can, of course, use the ready-made composition of the soil, if you are completely sure of the manufacturer or there is no other possibility. There are many recipes for self-compilation of soil. We offer several options:

  1. In equal parts, take garden and leafy soil, humus or compost. Then 5 liters of water are poured and carbamide (5 grams), superphosphate (15 grams), potassium sulfate (10 grams) are added to it. The solution is well mixed and watered the prepared soil.
  2. Peat and sand are added to the leafy soil in a ratio of 1:1:1. Wood ash (100 grams) and any phosphate fertilizer (1 tablespoon) are added to 5 liters of water, then the soil is spilled.
  3. They take equally humus, soddy land, add the same amount of river sand washed from silt a glass of ash. Everything is thoroughly mixed.

Regardless of whether flower or vegetable seeds are sown, the soil must be decontaminated. After all, it may contain spores of diseases and pests . A few days before sowing, the soil is either spilled with boiling water with dissolved manganese, hydrogen peroxide, or steamed (fried) in an oven, microwave or in a water bath.

After three days, seeds can be sown. During this time, the soil settles, all voids are filled. In addition, beneficial bacteria begin to work actively in the soil.

Why are there no shoots

Often, gardeners complain that the sown seeds do not germinate. There may be several reasons:

  • Old, expired seeds. The fact is that each culture has its own shelf life, which is responsible for germination. For example, in tomatoes, it is three years.
  • The soil is dense, heavy or too salty.
  • Seeds sown too deep. According to the rules of agricultural technology, the depth of sowing of vegetable crops and flowers is from 0.5 to 1.5 mm. And small flower seeds, such as those of petunia, lobelia, are not sprinkled with earth at all, but are scattered over a damp surface.
  • Infected seeds and soil.
  • Too damp soil, the seeds just rot.

It is not difficult to check the germination of seeds: you need to sow several pieces in advance. If the seedlings are more than 70%, the seed can be used.

Preparing seeds for sowing

You can get a good harvest of vegetable crops and lushly flowering flower beds only from healthy seeds. That is why they need to be specially prepared.

Features of the choice of planting material

When buying seeds in a store, you need to pay attention to:

  • best before date;
  • suitability for cultivation in a particular region;
  • who is the manufacturer, as plants grown from imported seeds do not always produce the yield stated in the description;
  • hybrid plants with the F1 icon are more resistant to weather conditions and diseases;
  • cultivation method: for greenhouses or open ground;
  • maturation time;
  • application possibilities.

All these factors affect the correct choice of seeds, and as a result, the yield.

Seed preparation

As they said in the old days: “A good seed makes an excellent tribe.”

Therefore, seed is taken first. Seeds of tomatoes, cucumbers are dipped in salted water (a tablespoon of salt per liter of water). Viable seeds will fall to the bottom, the rest should just be thrown away. The remaining specimens are washed with clean water.

warming up

If the seeds were stored on the street, then they must be brought into the room 30 days before sowing so that they warm up to room temperature. Then wrap them in a cloth and put them on a battery or on a stove (in the countryside).

In good firms, seeds are treated with a laser or ultrasound. But most often they do not undergo processing and can be fraught with a “delayed-action mine” – spores of diseases. Therefore, the seeds are treated. You can use a pink solution of potassium permanganate, in which the seed is kept for a third of an hour. Hydrogen peroxide, Epin or aloe juice have a good effect on bacteria and diseases.

Seed material is poured into a gauze bag. After disinfection, rinse with clean water and dry on paper.

seed soaking

Seeds of vegetables, some annual flowers (mallow, dahlias, asters, zinnias) are soaked before sowing. The container is covered with cloth, cotton wool, cotton pads or moss. Moisten with water and spread the seeds on them. The surface must be well moistened. Stagnation of water is not allowed, otherwise the seeds will not have enough oxygen. 12 hours is enough for soaking.

Quick shoots appear from germinated seeds of tomatoes, cucumbers and other crops. The air temperature must be at least 20 degrees. Seeds can be covered with foil or placed in a plastic container with a lid.

When white dots appear, tomato seeds are placed in the refrigerator for half a day, where the temperature is usually about two degrees Celsius. Then for 12 hours leave in a room at a temperature of +20 degrees.

From hardened seeds, viable seedlings are obtained, which not only do not get sick, but also bear fruit better, the fruits ripen faster. As soon as the seeds begin to peck, they are immediately sown in the ground.

How to sow seeds

And now about how to grow seedlings of flowers and vegetables (including cucumbers) indoors. Seeds can be sown in different ways:

  • in a common container;
  • in separate cups;
  • into a snail.

The first method is in the hotbed

The prepared soil is leveled, moistened with water, grooves are made and seeds are sown at a distance of about 2-2.5 cm to a depth of no more than 1.5 cm. This parameter depends on the size of the seeds. When planting seeds of annual flowers, this is also taken into account.

As already mentioned, the seed of some colors, due to its small size, is not deepened, but sown on the surface. The surface is sprayed with water from a spray bottle, the container is covered with a film to create a greenhouse effect. Shelter is removed as soon as the first shoots appear.

Method two – in cups

Some plants are difficult to tolerate picking . For example, peppers are best sown one at a time in cups. The soil is prepared as usual. But in each container you need to plant 2-3 things in order to choose the best seedlings later.

Method three – in a snail

In recent years, comments have often been written about growing vegetable and flower seeds in toilet paper. The choice must be stopped on the usual, gray or white. In addition to paper, you will need a plastic cup, pieces of cellophane, and a spray bottle.

How to sow seeds of tomatoes, cucumbers or other crops in toilet paper:

  1. Spread the package on the table.
  2. Place toilet paper on top. First, along the top side of the package, then a little lower, along the bottom, in two layers. The main thing is to make sure that the cellophane is not visible.
  3. Spray each layer with water.
  4. Planting material is laid out on the top of the snail at a distance of no more than 1 cm from the edge. The step between the seeds is 1-2 cm. Another layer of toilet paper can be put on top.
  5. After that, carefully fold the paper together with the bag into a roll, aligning the edges of the twist
  6. An elastic band is put on top, they sign what seeds are sown.
  7. Water is poured into a plastic glass (no more than 10 cm) and snail rolls are placed in it with the lower edge, on which there are no seeds.
  8. Pull the bag over the top to maintain the desired temperature.

Regardless of the method used for sowing seedlings, containers are installed in a warm and bright room. Cellophane or glass is lifted from time to time to ventilate the crops.

As you can see, it is not so difficult to sow the seeds of vegetable crops and annual flowers, the main thing is to follow the rules of agricultural technology.
