Lawn with your own hands

lawn with your own hands Blog

What can be more pleasant than a green lawn under the windows of the house? On the soft grass, it is nice to lie down on a warm summer day at the cottage, bask in the sun. And if you planted a lawn with your own hands it is twice as pleasant.
Do we lounge – you say. – We need to work in the country, not bask. But the beautiful clearing is not in front of the house. And before it appears, it will have to work hard! But then you will not be satisfied with the creation of his hands. So, it’s time to get down to business. And our case is called a lawn with his hands – the future green lawn.
Before making a lawn, choose a place for it – in the sun, in the extreme case, if sorry to lose the garden bed, you can break up the lawn and in the light penumbra. Of course, you made sure that the clearing will be protected from the winds. Snow does not stay here for a long time, and therefore in the spring the neat even bristles of young grass will be the first to break through the melted ground. About the grass seeds for the lawn, you have also already taken care of and purchased a colorful bag of seeds in the store. If it’s meadow bluegrass, red fescue and meadow fescue, your choice is right. Grassland ryegrass is less tolerant of cold and has low winter hardiness. In addition, lawn grass is chosen with the purpose of the lawn in mind. Check the advice on the seed packet to see whether it is for a party lawn, English lawn, sports lawn or playground. We want to grow a recreation lawn so that the children can frolic in it and we ourselves can enjoy a nice rest in such a clearing if we want to.

Preparing the soil and seeding

Before breaking up the lawn, you should thoroughly prepare the soil, loosen it to a depth of 25-40 cm, but do not move the lower layers up, as is done in the usual digging, then remove weeds and stones. The whole site should preferably be covered with compost (a layer of 10 – 15 cm) and well level. It is best to carry out these works in the fall. If the soil has to prepare just before sowing, it is necessary after recultivation to wait a few days so he settled. Depending on the weather, the lawn is planted from late April to September. Use 15 to 50 grammes of seed per m2. Consolidate the soil surface shortly before planting. This can be done by tying planks to the feet, or with a special roller. Seeds are sown in a scattered manner. To make the sowing even, first spread the seeds along and then across the area of the future lawn. Around the edges an additional sowing is done a third time. Use a claw to bury the seeds to a depth of 1-1,5 cm, and once again compact the surface of the soil. Water carefully. For the seeds to germinate evenly, the soil must be constantly moist. The seeds will germinate in about 10 days. When the grass rises to palm length, it should be mowed. Do not mow earlier, as the young grass is not yet mature. The first mowing is best done with a sickle or sharp scythe, but not with a lawnmower, which can pull out some of the grass along with the roots.

Lawn care and weed control

Do not walk on a young lawn. If you need to sow grass or weed, put a light wooden board under your feet, wear shoes without heels. Just like in the beds, lawn care is all about constantly removing weeds. It is best to cut them out carefully with a sharp knife, or use scissors. While pulling weeds out of the ground, take care not to damage the turf. The most troublesome weeds are dealt with by using Roundup or some other herbicide. Try to immediately eliminate moles, trampled areas, gaps, sow lawn grass in time. After removing the weeds, cover the lawn each time. Covering the lawn is also recommended in early spring as soon as the soil allows. This annual lawn care technique helps eliminate gaps between turf layers and increases moisture flow to the roots. Another useful way to care for your lawn is to comb through the grass with a rake to remove dead shoots, debris and improve soil aeration. A rake with wooden tines is a good idea.
Lawn care includes regular mowing. To maintain the decorative green carpet of your lawn, the grass should be mowed as often as possible (every 5-14 days), when the grass begins to come out in the tube. Cut the grass at a height of 3 to 4 cm, not lower. Grass cuttings should be removed immediately. Do not leave tall grass for the winter, as this leads to rooting out. When to mow the lawn last time is a frequent question of beginners. The last mowing should usually take place in autumn when temperatures have dropped to 10°C.
After each mowing, especially on dry hot days, the lawn should be thoroughly watered, and soak the soil should not be less than 15 cm. It is better to water late in the evening or early in the morning.
Remembering to water, do not forget about the regular fertilization. Once in 3-4 years it’s useful to give a full mineral fertilizer for lawns (100 g/m2) in spring, annually during the season until mid-August 5-6 times should be given urea (30 g/m2). Lawn fertilisers should be stopped at the end of the summer so that the grass does not overgrow; too much nitrogen can cause it to freeze to death in winter.
It is undesirable to walk on snow that has covered the lawn so as not to compact it. A dense, heavy layer of snow worsens grass overwintering conditions.
A well-maintained lawn should be dense with uniformly colored grass. It is impossible to imagine a modern garden without a lawn. Although it is not easy to grow a lawn, you will certainly take the work and try to do everything thoroughly. Then a beautiful green lawn in front of your home will serve for many years.
