– Without him, a dacha is not a dacha, and a vegetable garden is like an orphan, – this is exactly what summer residents say when it comes to onions. In demand, tasty, a little expensive and so important in every dish, it has become a part of our culinary tradition. And if there is a small area, then there will definitely be a place for onion planting. Have you wondered how to grow good onions? We know the answer to this question and will share our experience!
Onions on greens
As soon as the snow melts, green sprouts begin to hatch in the beds. This is a green onion that summer residents grow on a feather. In terms of taste, it is not inferior to feathers from an ordinary onion, but it rises earlier. Most feather onion companies provide a greenhouse environment for growth and development. An ordinary person is unlikely to be able to grow such an onion, and therefore will have to look for an alternative. The indisputable leader in yield, cold resistance and taste is the onion. It is also called a seven-year plan: it can be grown in one place for 4-7 years (depending on the number of dressings, the type of soil). It is he who “wakes up” along with the snowdrops and disappears from the beds after the first frost. In just one season, you can get 4-5 harvests of this amazing product. The most delicious onion grows in early spring. The harvest in July will be harsh. Autumnal taste differs little from spring. This plant does not like heat, which inevitably affects the taste.
Seeds are sown in early spring, when the snow is just melting from the fields and the ground thaws a little. For several years you can not worry about green onions: you need top dressing, weeding and … that’s all. No transfers. Although practice shows that summer residents plant plants to increase the yield.
The plant does not produce bulbs and must not be uprooted. Enough cutting. And then in a month or two a new crop will ripen.
If you want to get a good harvest of onions, then you probably know that there should be several types of onions in one area at once. Different yields, tastes, sizes and other characteristics of varieties will help to achieve the best results. Onions per head are most conveniently grown from sets. There is a lot of it on the market both in autumn and spring. The varieties are different both in shape and color. Unfortunately, most summer residents prefer the Stuttgarten onion. If the site has been well fertilized with manure, then you will get a huge harvest. Bulb sizes can be up to 700-800 grams! And this is a lot … A lot. Where to put such a bow then? Unless to brag in front of neighbors in the country, what a large bow was a success! At most, you can use half or a quarter of an onion at a time for cooking. As a result, half of the harvest is unclaimed.
How to grow onions and how many varieties to buy on the site? You should definitely plant an oblong onion on the site – it is amazingly suitable for preparing salads for the winter. White and red onions are good for fresh salads and vegetable stews. But don’t overdo it with landings. For a small family, it will be more than enough to buy 150-300 grams of colored onion sets.
Choosing a set
Onion sets come in different sizes. Summer residents are always faced with a dilemma: buy small or large sets? In school, we were taught that large seeds always yield better because they have more potential. For the sake of experiment, plant a large and small set next to it. By the time of harvest, you will see that the onions are the same size. But from an economic point of view, buying a small set is much more profitable. In a kilogram of large seeds, you will find a couple of dozen bulbs, and in small ones there will be hundreds of them!
Distance between bulbs
What summer residents do not write! Some say that onions should be given potential and planted as far as possible from each other. It seems to some that 15 centimeters is not enough. In fact, onions can be planted thickly, leaving a gap of up to 10 centimeters. Firstly, then the bulbs will not grow to a gigantic kilogram size. Secondly, if the onions are destined to be productive this year, then there will be a lot of them, regardless of the distance between the bulbs. If there is not enough space on the site, you can safely leave a gap of 10 centimeters: you will save space and get a harvest.
In the old days, he was incredibly popular. It was difficult to get sevok – to grow only from seeds, and therefore people preferred to grow family onions. For this, the most beautiful and healthy small bulbs were left and constantly monitored so that they did not start to deteriorate. In the spring, as a rule, on May 22, the onions were soaked in a solution of potassium permanganate for several hours, the top was cut off (the more cut, the more greenery there will be), and the bulbs were planted in the beds. Today, the cultivation process has not changed, and the traditions have also remained, only the popularity of family onions has fallen. His yield is small, he is quite capricious and much more susceptible to pests.
It is noteworthy that large family onions are rare. Bulbs are rarely more than 200 grams in weight. Its taste is sweetish, so lovers of spicy onions are unlikely to appreciate the quality of this vegetable positively.
