Some novice gardeners do not want to collect their own vegetable seeds. They prefer to buy ready-made. This usually happens up to a certain point, when the purchased seed suddenly does not sprout or the crop is not at all happy. And then self-harvesting of seeds becomes the only right decision.
Of course, you should not refuse to experiment with new varieties. But, so that the season does not go to waste, you should always plant a couple of reliable varieties. According to summer residents, the Murom and Nezhensky varieties never fail. They grow well in open ground and are great both in fresh salads and in conservation.
How to choose seed fruit
In the season, several powerful lashes are isolated and large even cucumbers are left on them. Vegetables should be fully ripe. In a ripe fruit, the peel becomes yellow or even light brown, the stalk becomes dry. In order not to inadvertently pick cucumbers earlier, tie a bright ribbon near the stem.
It is advisable to put thin boards under the selected vegetables. This will prevent rotting of the fruit in case of a cool or rainy season. But with prolonged autumn rains, it is better to pick the vegetable earlier and leave it in a warm room for 10-15 days to ripen.
It is advisable to collect seed cucumbers after the first autumn frosts. A natural stratification of the future seed will be obtained, which contributes to an increase in germination during spring crops.
Cucumbers are cut lengthwise into halves. Experienced gardeners do not advise choosing seeds in the area of \u200b\u200bthe stalk (about 2-3 cm). Since cucumbers with bitterness will grow from this seed.
Stages of work to obtain high-quality seed
- The seed chambers are thoroughly cleaned. The seed, together with the pulp, is placed in a jar, a little water is added and buried. The container is left for two days to separate the amniotic film. This is very important, because the film contains substances that prevent the germination of grains. If the shell remains, then good germination of cucumbers in the future can not be expected.
- The seed is washed, left in a jar and poured with clean water. After a while, empty grains float, and full ones sink to the bottom. It is advisable to change the water several times and at the same time throw away empty seeds.
- The liquid is drained and the remaining grains are laid out to dry on a napkin, paper.
Some summer residents try to speed up the drying process and spread the grains closer to heat sources. Should not be doing that. It is better to put the seed in a well-ventilated, lighted place and turn it over periodically.
For seeds, it is advisable to choose a thick paper bag or a fabric bag – any breathable material. They should not be heavily tamped. Store seed in a cool, dark place.
Since the seed remains viable for 6 years, it is recommended to sign the envelope – indicate the variety, year of harvest. Moreover, it is better to plant seeds 2-4 years after harvest (then female flowers will be tied on the lashes). It is believed that in the first year the plants will have many male flowers – empty flowers.
Seeds from homemade cucumbers are the best option to get consistently rich crops of vegetables. Indeed, in this way it is easy to choose varieties that grow well and bear fruit in a particular climatic zone.
