Daffodils: planting and care

Narcissus – a flower from the legend

In early spring, as soon as the snow melts, daffodils are already green. And soon a scattering of flowers begins to delight the soul and eye yearned for the winter with its beauty: terry white with delicate transparent petals and a subtle aroma, yellow terry and tubular. Such a delicate lively palette of discreet colors!

Daffodils are so attractive with their grace that they gave rise to a legend about a beautiful young man in love with his reflection in the water. This is a flower of a foggy dream, sadness, lyrical loneliness. Narcissus in the wild lives in light damp deciduous mountain forests and in wet mountain meadows. This is a bulbous plant. The bulb is perennial. Garden forms of daffodils are the work of more than one generation of breeders who have created a huge number of varieties and hybrids.

Where can you plant daffodils

Planting and caring for daffodils is very simple. They can be grown in open summer flower beds, or you can forge flowers in winter and spring in greenhouses or just in an apartment. Forcing will allow you to admire beautiful daffodils in the middle of winter. Their bulbs do not freeze even in the most frosty winters, so they are grown in the northern regions, including Perm and Sverdlovsk. Growing daffodils has fascinated me for decades. In my flower garden, there are terry, and tubular, crown and tacet daffodils, all of different flowering periods, which allows you to admire the flowers for quite a long time. They look great next to Rosie Sacris (tubular pink-apricot with a brown tint on the edge) and pure white Mrs. Bock House, terry yellow Texas and tall, up to35 centimeters, slender white crowned daffodils Argentina. I have 15 varieties in total.

I do not allocate a special ridge for growing daffodils, there is not enough space, I plant daffodils and tulips under trees. When it’s time to plant the bulbs, I don’t forget to step back from the tree trunk to30 cm. While the tree is dressing with a spring leaf, daffodils and tulips are already fading. It seems to me that this is also useful for trees, because by watering and feeding the flowers, I also nourish the tree at the same time. You can plant in a circle, alternating rows of daffodils and tulips, or making a flower bed around the tree with alternating sectors.

Preparing the soil for planting

So, when to plant and repot daffodil bulbs? Despite the fact that it is customary to plant daffodils in the fall, I begin to prepare the soil in advance from June. If the soil on the site is clayey, you need to make sawdust. I wet sawdust in April with slurry (3 buckets of mullein per10 liters water) or urea (100 g on the 10 liters). I bring sawdust 2 buckets on1 sq. meter, for each meter I add 2 buckets of humus and sprinkle with full mineral fertilizer (80 gper sq. meter). Before planting, I water and dig up the site several times, removing weeds. At the last digging, I add peat, make furrows 18-20 cmand lay out the bulbs of daffodils in them. I put each bulb on a handful of sand and sprinkle it with a handful of sand too, only then I cover it with earth. This facilitates the access of air, and the bulbs do not come into contact with the soil, and therefore do not rot. In addition, the sand keeps mice out. I plant bulbs in late August or early autumn.

Planting bulbs and caring for plants

I don’t keep dug bulbs for a long time, as a rule, I plant the next day, in extreme cases, within a week. During this time, the bulbs do not dry out and take root quickly. Before planting, I water the soil with a solution of manganese (2 g on the 10 literswater) and in the same solution I soak the bulbs themselves for an hour. In the spring, still in the snow, I scatter urea. As soon as the snow melts and the plants grow up to 3-5 cm, I give top dressing with a solution of Rodnichok fertilizer or other complete mineral fertilizer – this top dressing coincides with the budding period. 3 top dressing is done during the flowering period: potash fertilizer (30 grams on the 10 liters) or ash. Such top dressing allows you to keep the greens longer, and the longer the plant grows, the more powerful the bulb will be and the larger the future flower. In one place, without digging up the bulbs, I keep daffodils up to 6 years.

Disease and pest control

Daffodils, like other flowers, get sick. Fusarium is the most dangerous. The causative agent of the disease – the fungus enters the plant through young roots from infected soil or develops during storage of the bulbs. GRAY ROT – This disease affects flower stalks. The plant gradually softens and rots. MOSAIC is a viral disease. The peduncle is bent, the leaves are deformed and wrinkled. Especially often tubular, terry and crowned varieties fall ill.

A measure of the fight against these diseases in the first place is the correct agricultural technology. I also apply preventive measures, not waiting for possible diseases. 2 times a season I sprinkle the aisles with dry ash and do not loosen. In addition, in each top dressing I add0.5 g manganese on 10 liters. It is also important to periodically transplant daffodils to another place.

Daffodils also suffer from pests. Naked slugs infect buds and bulbs. Narcissus fly (tuberous hoverfly) winters in the bulb. In spring, pupation and flies emerge.

Before flowering and during the flowering period, I spray the plants with a solution of karbofos (30 g on the 10 literswater).

One day, my daffodils, especially the taceto-like varieties, took on a strange look – they turned green. First, the buds turned green, and all the flowers that blossomed out of them turned out to be salad-colored. For a long time I could not figure out the reason for this phenomenon. Many claimed that it was a viral disease. And I cured my daffodils with mustard. When planting the bulbs in the furrow, she sprinkled ashes, and then sprinkled with mustard powder. In this garden, all the flowers had a normal color.

One more piece of advice. If you want your daffodils to bloom earlier, cover them with some more snow. I put a frame for the film over them in the fall, and in the spring I cover the film on it. In the first year of flowering, plants have the largest flowers. Growing, planting and caring for daffodils is fairly simple, however, what fun you will have in the spring when these gorgeous plants bloom!
